"The Arts" at The Pink Paper encompasses any creative endeavor imaginable: music, painting, poems, photography, graffiti, crafts, cartoons, writing, stand up comedy….. you name it! Why? Because art heals. Because art can change the world. Because art rocks. Humans have been creating since the beginning of time. I believe it's part of our genetic make-up to create, to engage in the arts and to engage in the creative process.
The healing power of art is NOT a new idea or concept. There is support for the statement, "Art heals" all over the world. The Foundation For Art & Healing has made it their mission to:"Explore the fundamental connection between art and the healing process, while providing active, ongoing support to communities and individuals." The Arts & Healing Network has been an online resource "…for anyone interested in the healing potential of art." American Art Therapy Association, Inc. is, "Dedicated to the belief that making art is healing and life enhancing." Professor of Neurobiology Semir Zeki specializes in studying the visual brain. In his essay, Artisitic Creativty and The Brain he wrote, "The acquisition of knowledge by registering the constant and essential characteristics of objects is the primordial function of the visual brain. It is also the primordial function of art. That is why many great philosophers concerned with the problem of knowledge, from Plato onward, have devoted large parts of their work to discussions of art." I'd like to conclude by saying, "THE ARTS ROCK."
