Balance Your Hormones…Naturally!
By Cathy Margolin
Let’s face it, as women our hormones fluctuate all month long. In fact, our hormones fluctuate from morning to night. In the morning our testosterone peaks and in the evening our estrogen is higher. This doesn't always make life so easy. Wouldn't it be nice to have a little predictability in our internal hormone balance? I think we can all agree it would be nice, but let's face it, we live in a toxic world and our bodies are bombarded daily with hormones cloaked as food, cosmetics, shampoo’s etc., etc. We women pay a high price for these. First with our wallets and then these toxic chemicals cause all kinds of havoc with our hormone balance. These toxic chemicals are like little invisible ninja’s messing with our internal mood control switch.
For example the toxic chemicals found in body lotions like parabens, act as estrogen in our bodies. Isn’t it difficult enough that we women naturally produce more estrogen than men? We really don’t need any more. But these estrogen disrupting chemicals are everywhere, in sunscreens, food, cosmetics and even water! Toxins can act upon our estrogen receptors and put us into what is termed “estrogen dominance” all month long.
Toxins get stored in our fat cells and often affect our ever-changing hormonal balance. How can we combat this? Well, aside from living in a cave today, there are some easy ways to decrease your toxic load and reduce environmental chemicals acting like estrogen in your body.
Consider first, your food is medicine. Hippocrates said it best, “ Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” Look at the food you’re eating and consider where you might be adding hormones. Meat and dairy are the biggest culprits. If you eat meat or drink milk, make sure the package says, Hormone Free or rBGH Free (Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone). Organic is best and will be hormone free.
The goal here is to eliminate unnecessary chemicals that act like estrogen in our bodies. This is one easy way to reduce the symptoms of estrogen dominance that often show up as: menstrual cramps, PMS, mood swings, headaches and the list goes on. Eating a healthy nutrient-dense diet of predominantly vegetables will reduce excess amount of estrogen and help restore a more natural hormone balance. This will help you lose weight, think more clearly and have less mood fluctuations all month long. Estrogen dominance is also a leading factor in women diagnosed with breast cancer.
